Updated June 2026 · From the JP Designs studio
3D relief wall art is artwork where the design physically rises from a flat background, so the depth, shadow and texture you see are real rather than printed. Because the surface is raised, the piece changes with the light in your room, which is why relief art feels closer to sculpture than to a picture.
We get asked this a lot, usually by someone holding one of our frames for the first time. They tilt it, watch the light move across the surface, and ask what it actually is. It's not a print. It's not a canvas. So here's a proper answer, from the people who make it.
So what is 3D relief wall art, exactly?
Relief is a sculptural technique where the subject is raised from a flat backing instead of being carved fully in the round. Tate defines relief as any work in which the design projects from the surface, and the word itself comes from the Latin relevare, to raise. Our pieces are what's traditionally called low relief or bas-relief: the design sits a few millimetres proud of a deep black background, framed behind glass.
It's one of the oldest art forms there is. The carved walls of Egyptian temples, the Elgin Marbles, the panels on cathedral doors, even the portrait on a pound coin. All reliefs. Britannica's history of relief sculpture goes back tens of thousands of years. What we do at our studio is take that ancient technique and bring it into modern homes as framed, giftable wall art.

How is it different from a print or canvas?
One word: depth. Real depth, not the illusion of it.
A print uses shading to trick your eye. A relief doesn't need to, because the highlights and shadows are physically there, and they move. In the morning, a gold leaf piece looks soft and warm. Under a lamp in the evening, the same piece turns dramatic, with deep shadow pooling in every contour. People often tell us it's the first thing guests comment on, because flat art simply doesn't do that.
This is also where relief differs from other textured wall art like woven hangings or plaster panels. A relief is pictorial. It's a portrait of something: a dog, a butterfly, a word, a symbol. Detail like a portrait, presence like a sculpture.
How do we make ours?
Every piece starts as a sculpted relief, modelled so the design rises roughly three millimetres from a pure black background. Then comes the part we love most: gilding. Each relief is finished by hand in gold or silver leaf, sheet by sheet, pressed and smoothed with a soft brush at the bench in our UK studio. Leaf is delicate, slightly unpredictable stuff, and that's the point. The way it settles over the contours means no two pieces ever come out identical.
We're members of the Crafts Council, and everything is made to order rather than pulled off a shelf. The finished artwork measures 19 x 19 cm inside a 33 x 33 cm black wooden box frame with a white mount and glass front, ready to hang straight out of the box. Full measurements are in our Framing & Size Guide.

Relief lets us do things flat art can't, like the dripping finish on our Molten French Bulldog.
Gold leaf or silver leaf?
The question we're asked daily. Gold has a warm, rich glow that suits neutral, earthy and traditional rooms, and it's our bestseller by a comfortable margin. Silver is brighter and crisper, brilliant against grey, white and modern monochrome interiors. If you're buying a gift and genuinely can't decide, go gold. We've written a full comparison in our gold vs silver leaf guide if you want to dig deeper.
Where does 3D wall decor work best?
Honestly, the compact square format is the secret. At 33 x 33 cm, these pieces fit where bigger art overwhelms: hallways, alcoves, landings, the wall beside a bed, a kitchen nook. One relief on its own reads as a quiet statement piece. Two or three in a row start to feel like a gallery wall. And because the palette is black, white and metallic, they sit happily next to art you already own.

Why do people choose relief art?
After thousands of conversations with customers, it comes down to three things.
It has presence. Textured, sculptural art feels substantial in a way a print at the same price never quite manages.
It means something. A huge number of our pieces are bought to remember a much-loved dog or cat, often with a name and dates added in calligraphy script. If that's you, our pet memorial guide and dog memorial gift ideas are gentle places to start. Others choose a symbolic design to mark a wedding, a retirement or a new home.
It's genuinely one of a kind. Hand gilding guarantees it. The piece on your wall exists nowhere else.

Frequently asked questions
What does relief mean in art?
Relief is a sculptural technique where the design is raised from a flat background rather than carved fully in the round. Low relief, also called bas-relief, rises only slightly from the surface, and that's the style used in framed 3D relief wall art.
Is 3D relief wall art heavy?
No. A framed 33 x 33 cm piece hangs from a single picture hook or nail. No special fixings, no drilling anxiety. Every frame arrives ready to hang.
How do I clean and care for relief wall art?
The relief sits behind glass in a box frame, so care is easy. Dust the frame and glass with a soft dry cloth now and then. Avoid strong direct sunlight and humid rooms like bathrooms and the finish will stay beautiful for years.
Is gold leaf wall art real gold?
Our artwork is finished in gold or silver leaf tones, applied by hand using the traditional gilding method with a soft brush. It's the hand finishing that gives each piece the authentic shimmer and slightly unique surface of gilded art. You can read more in our finish guide.
Can 3D relief wall art be personalised?
Yes. Most designs can carry a name or dates in an elegant calligraphy script on the mount. It's a small addition that turns a beautiful object into a keepsake, which is why it's especially popular on memorial pieces and milestone gifts.
Is relief art a good gift?
It's one of the most giftable kinds of art there is: handmade, ready to hang, personal rather than disposable. The occasions we see most are pet memorials, anniversaries, retirements, new homes and birthdays. Our symbolic gifts guide is full of ideas if you're stuck.
What size is JP Designs 3D relief wall art?
The artwork window is 19 x 19 cm and the black wooden box frame is 33 x 33 x 3 cm, roughly 13 x 13 inches. Everything arrives framed behind glass with a white mount, ready to hang. Full details are in our Framing & Size Guide.
Can I get a relief made from my own photo?
Yes. We create custom pet portraits sculpted from your photo, with a design approval step before anything goes into production, so you see exactly what you're getting.
